About Me

Like most people I started fishing with bait and spinners but eventually made the move to the wonderful sport of fly fishing. Now almost exclusively I am a fly fisher. Fly fishing is cool, it is a way of life, the fishing is different; it's more involved, it's more connected, certainly for me it is more enjoyable.

Primarily I am a trout fisher but I am getting more and more into chasing other species. I am particularly interested with Scottish coarse and salt water species at the moment in particular pike, pollack, mackeral and perhaps some salt water sea trout. Pike fly fishing is a part of the sport that is getting more and more popular and it is certainly time for me to join in. Like most people in this country I have a lot of waters with other coarse fish such as carp, roach, tench etc that are certainly capable of offering some excitement on the fly for someone willing to step outside the box. Keep an eye on my blog for developments with these others species.

I have fished mainly in Scotland and have recently fished an entire year in New Zealand (I can't wait to travel again!) The trout fishing there is unparalleled; crystal clear water, very large spooky trout readily willing to take well presented dry flies, nymphs and streamers. The learning experience involved in stalking these fish really drilled home the importance of good casting. Put simply, if your casting is not spot on, you don't stand a chance with these fish. Before fishing New Zealand my preference was dry fly fishing on lochs but I have now been converted to the way of the flow, the running river - it's just a magical myriad of different currents that present infinite challenges to be overcome to fool the fish.

I am a GAIC qualified single handed instructor and I regularly teach at the Glasgow Casting Club. The club runs during the summer months at 7pm on a Thursday evening at Knightswood pond in Glasgow and at 10am on a Sunday morning during the winter months. Aside from the normal casting practice, I'm getting quite interested both in slack line control for river fishing and distance casting for competition. It's very interesting just how broad a discipline fly casting is!

Once you can cast to the fish, you can catch them!
