Tuition

Beginners

As a beginner, it is so easy to get confused in the world of fly fishing with the innumerable different rods, reels, lines, flies and then you sometimes have the frustration that learning to cast itself can bring. Reading books and other publications is a great start but sometimes you just need that 1-2-1 feedback to help understand it properly! The focus as a beginner will be on introducing the basic movements and concentrating on making these as efficient as possible. Efficient casting leads to great casting!

In a beginner's lesson, we will generally cover:

  • Introduction to safety
  • Introduction to setting up tackle - rods, lines, knots, leaders etc
  • Basic casting - overhead cast, roll cast, shooting line, hauling
  • Casting focus will be on developing casting movements for efficiency.

This is not an extensive list, purely as an example. We can of course cover anything that you wish to cover!

One of the main goals from a first lesson is to result in you being able to go out with confidence and catch fish!

Intermediates and Advanced

For more experienced fly fishers looking to improve their casting in general, improve specific areas or learn new casts we can focus on:

  • Double hauling
  • Single handed spey casting
  • Slack line and presentation casts
  • Distance casting

Again this is by no means a complete list, just an idea.

The Lesson

All of my tuition is on a 1-2-1, so you can rest assured you will have 100% of my time. Group bookings are also possible, for group bookings please contact me for more information. I offer lessons hourly or as a half day. I request a minimum of 2 hours so that we can ensure the best quality tuition. The half day (4 hours) lesson allows for a more relaxed tempo, a longer learning experience and more time for feedback from myself. With your permission I also provide video feedback/analysis as part of the lesson as I am a firm believer that being able to see your own cast is a great confidence booster and fault finder that serves to increase the speed of the learning process exponentially! If you do not have your own equipment do not worry, I can provide all that is required. It may actually be beneficial if you would like to try out different equipment before making a purchase yourself. The lesson doesn't end at the end of the day - I am happy to provide feedback/answer questions over the phone, via email and through video analysis, all you have to do is ask!

I generally teach around the Glasgow area but can travel further afield if required. Depending on the distance, extra costs may be incurred but these will be priced on an individual basis. Location can be flexible but we can discuss all of these factors before you make any booking. I normally teach on still water but we can arrange for running water too - especially if it is river based casts you are looking to learn.
